POWTOON!

POWTOON!
At the end of last term and the start of this term we have been POWTOON! Powtoon is like a little video clip. Everybody in the class did one. Here is my one:

If you ask me I think that was pretty cool. Anyway I really liked it and if I were to give it a rating from 1 to 10 it would be eight and a half.

RAD RHYTHM

RAD RHYTHM
On Monday the Year 3, 4, 5, and 6s got to witness a incredible show from Jonny (One of the Rad Rhythm teachers).

He is from Wellington and flew all the way down to Christchurch to see us. In the morning he went to rooms 19, 20 and 21 to have their 40 minute session. Then at 11:30 all the classes from years 3-6 went into the hall to watch a performance. Jonny talked to us about how one of his teachers gave him a pair of drum sticks and taught him how to drum. He then thought of making a career where he could teach kids how to play instruments. Jonny also told us three very important things that we should remember, they are dream big, work hard and help others

In the afternoon Room 18 got to have their 40 minute turn with Jonny. We all split up into 5 groups and were given different things to make music with. My group had bamboo sticks and plastic cups. The challenge was that we had to make our own musical item. Our team and another team were the winners! (Yay)

Here is a video of us.

Te reo Māori

Te Reo Māori
This term we have been doing Te Reo Māori every morning. When we do this we start with a karakia then we do a waiata called E hara i te mea.

After we do that all we do twelve questions, here I'm only going to show you six, they are:

1. Ko te aha te rā inanahi?
What was the day yesterday?
Then you respond with:
Ko te (The day yesterday) te rā inanahi.
It was (The day yesterday) yesterday

2. Ko te aha tēnei rā?
What day is it today

Ko te (The day) tēnei rā.
Today is (The Day)

3. Ko te aha te rā āpōpō?
What is the day tomorrow?

Ko te (The day tomorrow) te ra apōpō.
It is (The day tomorrow) tomorrow.

4. Ko te aha tēnēi marama?
What month is it?

Ko te (The month) tēnēi marama

5. E hia ō tau
How old are you
This one is tricky because if you are 9 and under you say:
E iwa (or under) oku tau
but if your 10 or over the you say:
Tekau (or over) oku tau

Last but not least...

kei te pēhea koe?

Kei te (how you feel) ahau.

Thanks Laura:)

Makey Makey

Makey Makey

This term Room 18 did Makey Makey.
Makey Makey was a cool experiment that involved 7 alligator-clips 1 USB cord a device and a Makey Makey circuit board that looks like this....

How to use Makey Makey.
There is lots of different ways to use Makey Makey. Here are two ways the piano or pac-man. Before we start you will need a device that has a USB plug. We will start with the piano.

Step 1: Plug all the alligator clips into the Makey Makey circuit board and then plug the other end of the alligator clips to some oranges like this:
Image result for makey makey
If you don't want to use oranges then you don't need to as long as it conducts electricity.

Step 2: Once you have done step 1 plug the USB cord into your device (That should have a  USB plug)

Step 3: Now you need to get the piano app. You can either search up Makey Makey piano and then find the website that looks like this

Piano - Makey Makey

or there is this website

Step 4: At the bottom of the Makey Makey circuit board will be a bronze rectangle that is labelled Earth. When you have got the piano app and you have done step 1 & 2  clip an alligator clip to the Earth rectangle and then squeeze the other end in one of your hands. Use your other hand to poke the objects that's connected to to Makey Makey and it should make a sound on your device.

Now for Pac-man
Step 1: First you need to grab a piece of paper and Led pencil (It has to be a Led pencil or else it will not work) and then draw a left arrow, up arrow, right arrow and down arrow and then draw little coming off them and going to the edge of the paper. It should look like this:

Step 2: Once you have done that you need to plug all the alligator clips into the Makey Makey circuit board and then plug the other end of the alligator clips to the little bit of pencil drawing that are connected to the Makey Makey circuit board.

Step 3: Plug the USB cord into your device and grab the pacman app or use this one...https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23162018/

Good Luck!

Scratch.

This year we have been doing Code club. Code Club is where Legends and a few of Team Koru (Years 4, 5 and 6) can create different projects. In these projects you have a little sheet to tell you how to do it, however once you have finished all of your projects then you make your own. Here I have got 3 different Scratch projects.  don't you check them out?

Here is my first one I ever did which is called  Rock Band! This one you press keys and listen. These are some of the keys you can press, space key, left arrow, right arrow, down arrow, up arrow, A key and last but not least, if you click the singer or the microphone they will either say hi or sing.

This is my second one. This one is called Lost in Space. It's pretty cool watching it the first couple of times but then after awhile it gets pretty boring. Oh and before I forget if you would like to see the rocket again then click the green flag and if you want the rock, monkey and star to stop then press the red button.

Ok moving to the next one this one is called Ghost Busters This one is my favourite because it's so fun to play. In this all you do is click the green flag then the space bar and after that little monster things will pop up and hide again. So you need to click as many as you can in 30 seconds. My high score is 15 so try and beat that. Good luck!
If you would like to try out scratch then here is the website https://scratch.mit.edu/
I hope you liked it, see you next time.

Camp Writing

Straight after the April holidays, from Wednesday 2nd of May to Friday 4th of May, I went on camp to Spencer Park with the Year 5s from my class and Room 20. Some of the things we did were learning about Sand Dunes, Orienteering, had delicious desserts and bounced on the bouncy pillow. My highlight from camp was probably the Adrenalin Forest. Here are my two pieces of writing about my time at camp. I hope you enjoy them.

REMEMBER WHEN

Remember when….we banged into the pillow at Adrenalin Forest so that we could get off Level One and move onto Level Two.
Remember when….we had seconds of the yummy dessert since we were still hungry.
That was my 2018 camp to Spencer Park .

Remember when...all the boys had to sit in time out because they were pushing other boys off the bouncy pillow.
Remember when...we slipped in the mud while we were looking for the marker.
That was my 2018 camp to Spencer Park.

Remember when….we made the sand dunes although we did break them.
Do you Remember when...we got into our hut at Forest Survivor when we had to show everybody our hut.
That was my 2018 camp to Spencer park.

CAMP CHALLENGE

I heard
The noisy fantail chirping as it flew past us.

I heard
Everyone in the group talking about where to go next and we got there in the end.

I saw
The bright red mushrooms as I searched for a distinctive tree near a marker.

I felt
My soggy shoes make sort of high pitch sound every time i took a step.

I felt
The rough pine needles poking my ankles as I wandered through the trees.

I wondered
How long it would take until we had finished.

I wondered
If it would rain soon.

Problem solving: Multiplication

This term our class has been doing more Problem Solving. We were learning how to solve multiplication problems by using different strategies.

On Thursday we used an app on the iPad called Explain Everything. This app is an interactive whiteboard that allows us to collaborate, write, record and share our maths thinking.

My maths mate and I decided to share how we solved the following multiplication problem. We used the strategies of place value and repeated addition.

We hope you enjoy our maths tutorial.

Please comment below if you learnt something new from our video.

Chapter Chat Activities

This term we have been part of Chapter Chat, a twitter based book chat. We have read a book called ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ which is about a boy named Jeff and he goes into the girls' bathroom and also makes friends with the meanest kid in the school and his name is Bradley. Then a councillor named Carla comes in and helps Bradley, then Bradley thinks Carla is in love with him.

Every Friday we went on Twitter with other schools in New Zealand that are also part of Chapter Chat. When we are on Twitter we answered questions in small groups about what we had read in the last week. Each week we also had to complete at least one quality Chapter Chat activity to share on Twitter.

This is one of my activities where I used a website called Poster my wall and then I just edited it and added my own stuff.

This is my second activity where I made my own tray and lunch for Bradley. I have a burger, apple and carton of milk.

This is my third activity where I made a Google Drawing and then made my own stars and star-chart for Bradley's class.

This is my fourth activity where I made another Google Drawing of Colleen's birthday party dresses.

This is my firth activity where I made a Google Document with Oshie about elephant facts.

What one was your favourite?
My favourite was Colleen's birthday invitation.

Haiku poem.

In Jackson's Studio, as part of our poetry unit for writing we have been learning how to write a haiku poem. A haiku poem is a popular Japanese poem that traditionally has three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables.

We took our notebooks into the playground and brainstormed words associated with an object. I chose the wooden plank bridge because I thought there was a lot of things I could say about it.

Next we came inside and composed our haiku poem using a website.

Here is mine, I hope you enjoy it.
